The debate continues on whether cell phones should be banned from schools. Do you think cell phones are a nuisance? Or do you think that kids should have them for safety reasons? Does your child have one?

I'm gonna be like Sweetpie said about herself-I got a story for almost every post ;D *deep sigh* My coworker's child has one, a high schooler. WHY does she text or call her mother constantly during the day? We have even asked her if the girl is in school and why is she encouraging the use of the phone during school hours? My high schooler has one..in this day and time, I dont see why kids shouldn't have one at school especially for emergency purposes because they wou ldnt be able to use any office phones, but they must not be allowed to use it willy-nilly

Emergency purposes? Isn't it the school personnel's job to notify parents in the case of an emergency?
I say keep em out of schools. More than likely, kids will attempt to use them at school when they're not supposed to.

I think it depends on the age. A high school kid I can understand, but no younger than that. If an emergency comes up, that's what school officials are for.

well school officials arent what they are supposed to be or do everything they get paid to do. there have been incidents where things happened at some local schools and parents were not notified until after the fact

Lois, I have to agree with you. I remember watching on TV as schools were put on lock down for one reason or another. The only way kids could communicate to their parents that they were OK was via cell phones.
So they do come in handy in emergencies.

Everytime some little thing happens and word gets out, parents want to bum-rush the school unnecessarily and pull their kids out. What do you need to pull your kids out for? I see your point Lois and sometimes school officials should take better steps to inform parents if something major happens, but many times, the situation has already been put under control and school continued as usual.
