Think of a couple who are very much in love. They talk to each other in loving tones, and sometimes words are not enough and they reach out to touch each other in an expression of the love that burns in them. They don't try to find excuses to be away from the person, but can't wait to be with them again.
Do you suppose that the Lord is any different? He cares for us with the greatest love that exists, but He also earnestly desires to be with us to show His love and to receive our expressions of love. But for many believers their relationship with the Lord has become like an old marriage relationship. The fire has gone out and the excitement at being with the person no longer exists. Everything they do for the other has become an obligation. Instead of earning the right to consideration and love from the other by giving of themselves, they begin to make demands and claim their 'rights.' Then when the person does not meet their needs, they harden their hearts. The ground is ripe for someone else to come along and rekindle the fire.
