Kindergarten Girl Handcuffed, Arrested At Fla. SchoolAVON PARK, Fla. -- Police arrested a 6-year-old Florida girl and even handcuffed her when she acted out in class. Police officers said Desre'e Watson, a kindergarten student at Avon Elementary School in Highlands County, had a violent run-in with a teacher on Thursday. "I was scared," the little girl said. Police claim the little girl got angry and began kicking and scratching. She even hit a teacher attempting to intervene in the disturbance. However, the girl's mother doesn't believe the story. "She never fell out. She is very respectful. If I tell her to do anything, she will do it," Lateshia Wilson said. School officials said they were forced to call the local police department, who cuffed the child and put her in a police cruiser. The little girl's mother is angry and said her daughter is usually very respectful. "I was very upset about that and I feel like they violated my baby's rights," Wilson said. The chief of police said his officers did the right thing. "When there is an outburst of violence, we have a duty to protect and make that school a safe environment for the students, staff and faculty. That's why, at this point, the person was arrested regardless what the age," said Chief Frank Mercurio, Avon Park Police Department. The kindergartner was booked in the Highland County jail and was charged with a felony and two misdemeanors.

I can imagine she probably had a temper tamtrum as some kids do but to have her handcuffed, arrested and booked is just wrong. Intereting to know what the make up of the school is.

This is the second time of heard of this type of incident and for some reason it always seems to be on a black student when in fact the shooters in schools are white kids. Whaddaya know...
After all of the attacks at the schools and this is what it has come down to. This girl was to serve as an example to the other children. They will throw the "I have to protect the children and the facilty" in your face. The girl had a meltdown and that teacher didn't effectively try to calm her down. Nuff said. But why is her face plastered all over? Funny, I have a 6 y.o. and he is mischievous and he does get to talking and sometimes even disturbs the class but he has never had a meltdown. We do keep constant control of his behavior. We talk to him and give him chances to straighten up his act and so far he doesn't want it to go physical.

At least THIS one's mother won't have her in front of a TV crowd that's chanting in a few years, because she's outta control. Some might see this as a bit extreme, but I say, so what? Long as they didn't REALLY take her to jail, (they handcuffed her and sat her in the squad car) and long as she wasn't hurt, I don't see the problem. Where I DO see a problem is that in this country, we've collectively gone SOFT on juvenile discipline. These kids need a little fear struck in them sometimes. A dose of reality can go a LONG way...even for a six year old, and in fact, it's better for her to get that dose at six, and not 16. I'd like to see if she shows her lil ass in class again. I don't buy that "my baby never acts up" routine from her mother. They NEVER do. Back in the day, our parents would've been like, "Good. Now didja whip dat ass, too?" If not, a stern lecture woulda been waiting at home...along with a stiff switch...

You don't handcuff a kid! The teacher should have snacthed her lil ass up and taken her to the principals office, the police should have NEVER been involved, they are trying to start young putting black kids in the system.

I think this is the second time something like this has happened to a little Black girl in Florida.
My question is, don't white kids throw tantrums in Florida? Why haven't we heard of a white kid being handcuffed?
It's really sad that this type of thing continues to happen.

So that teacher could get charged with assault, get fired, and the school system get sued? I see this as a discipline issue, NOT a race issue! We desensitize real issues of race when we assume racism in everything...

Good Lord.
Preventative maintenance...THAT'S the key!
Talk to your kids about these kinds of things and try to head off these behaviors at the pass.
It ain't just the SCHOOL'S responsibility here. More of us who had parents, and who ARE parents need to get that...

DaRock I have to disagree Florida is one of the most RACIST states in America, remember it was Florida that had police pulled black voters over before they pulled into vote in the Bush-Gore election. They have bad history of abuse towards Black folks. Also I was a Sheriffs officer for 4 years, I would NEVER put cuffs on a child BLACK ror WHITE!

I KNOW you disagree...your fonts make that real obvious. To each his own. My take is this...cuffs or Columbine? Black/or white, don't matter to me. Nice to see that SOMEONE ain't soft on juvenile discipline...

The article says: "The kindergartner was booked in the Highland County jail and was charged with a felony and two misdemeanors" which means she was taken to the police station right? That was wrong! If anything they should taken her to the principals office and called her parents to come get her. To involve the police was wrong ... they clearly was sending a message to not only the 6 year old but also her mother. Perhaps she has a history of acting out in class ... some people don't know how to handle kids when they meltdown.
And the mother is only adding to the problems here if she insists the girl always behaves well. No kid behaves well all the time.

Talking tough is your thing thats fine but the reality is someone has to deal with these kids on a human level, and contrary to your GOP Ideology, YES America is still racist and treats minorities different, as a part of the Law Enforcement community I have seen the abuse with my own eyes, the reason I am no longer a Sheriffs Officer is because I saw abuse and reported it, police are to PROTECT and SERVE not beat down and abuse.

This was a situation when the ole Board of Education would have sufficed.
DaRock is right...schools have gone soft of discipline for fear of parents getting angry and filing lawsuits. Parents are ALWAYS the first to say that their children are always good kids and are respectful when in reality, their kids really act out in school. It does make one ask....how does the kid act at home and are the parents doing their job? If they are, then theoretically, the schools shouldn't have much trouble out of them.
However, I don't like how they plaster this girl's face all over the TV. Yes, it is the white kids who commit the most violent offenses, but it is the black kids' faces that are on TV.
With that said, black children aren't angels themselves. Many get in trouble for fighting and acting smart in front of teachers and administrators. Just head to your nearest urban school.
