Know Thyself
If you’re in the market for a lasting relationship, get to know yourself first. Spend some quality time with yourself. Most of us are afraid of being alone. The idea of no one being around to distract us from our own thoughts is scary. We need to learn to embrace this special time with ourselves. Remember, in a relationship, there is no “we” before there is a “me.”
Do you have a healthy relationship with yourself? No - I mean yes. Well, maybe? “I really don’t know; what do you think?”
Unfortunately, you are the only one who can really answer that question.
Find some time for yourself. Go see a movie, attend a concert, take a walk in the park, jog, work out or just find a quiet place and spend some time with yourself. Listen to your inner voice. Put forth a conscious effort to listen to what “you” have to say. Try to learn something new about yourself. Be sure to eliminate unrealistic expectations; a few minutes alone won’t do the trick. A relationship needs time to grow! Keep scheduling time for yourself.
Relationships are work from beginning to end. Be patient! Show yourself some understanding when things get tough. When work, family and other relationships demands start to get in the way, remember your commitment to self. Try and rebalance your life. Remember to keep the lines of communication open. Although you have known yourself for many years now, this is no longer a relationship you take for granted.
Show yourself some love. You know your likes and dislikes. Treat yourself occasionally to something you enjoy. Keep working on your goals and try not to sacrifice your values in the process. Provide yourself with the necessary emotional, mental and spiritual support to stay focused.
Be a true friend to yourself. Take time to tackle your problems. We all have situations we need to confront within ourselves. Always listen to your inner voice. Don’t ignore your pain or whatever emotional issue is currently on the table. Acknowledge the presence of inner turmoil and get the healing process started. Never ignore your problems!
Sooner or later, we all fall. The trick is to get back up.
Cultivating a healthy relationship with yourself can only be helpful in your relationship with others. Developing an awareness of your flaws, likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and goals is an important step in the “Know thyself” process. With this awareness, you will know what you bring to any relationship. You will also be able to assess the feasibility of a relationship succeeding.
If you love yourself and would like to see your other relationship evolve into something special, remain committed to “Know thyself.” Those who have developed self-esteem, self-worth and self-respect are more likely to enjoy more positive relationships. Keep in mind that an investment in “self” is an investment in all of your relationships.
If you invest time, patience, communication and love in “me,” then the chances of a successful “we” increase.
