Is it possible for a person to abuse the ability to ask God for forgiveness? Let's say you are a Christian and you know what the Bible says. But instead of living the life that God wants you to live, you continue to do the wrong thing, over and over and over again. I'm not saying that Christians must be perfect, because none of us are perfect. But is it possible to abuse the fact that you know God will forgive you for your indiscretions?

I myself think it is possible to abuse it. Although we learn in church that GOD forgives us over and over which I know is true, BUT......I think people do abuse it. This sort of goes along with the post made awhile ago about people partying and acting up all week then run to church on Sunday, like one day in church will make up for their badness the other six. And with that post, I was really shocked that no one said, "I am still a work in progress, GOD isn't through with me yet," blah, blah, blah cause it has been said before and I have heard it personally.

I agree that it can be abused. What's the point of going to church and learning the word it you know you have that safety net?

I totally agree, the intererting thing about God is that the Bible say's "His mercy endures forever", I do think we can grieve God by habitual sin, but I believe if we ask God for help in our area of weakness he will help us. (James 4:7)

I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
"Confess" means to mention the exact sin. This is the first step to forgiveness. Christians are not righteous in their own right. We have taken on the righteousness of Christ. We are washed in the blood of the Lamb and robed in His white robe.

(James 4:7) I know GOD can help us too but that doesnt exactly cover the original question of why and how people do the same sin or sins over and over? Aren't we to at least attempt to help ourselves by at least trying to stop the sin?

As I am learning everything is about choice. We are brought to palces of descisions after that it is our choice, I am learning the neccesity of making right choices, as all things have a cause and effect dynamic. Of courese I have not always made the right choices and still don't always, am learning however, everything we do has some effect whether good or bad, all have consequences (for lack of a better word) rather good or bad. If I choose to do this I need to think of the affect this will have, it may not be soon, but eventually the effect will manifesr. I have seen many times in my life where the desire to do something, that may have really been enjoyable for me, at the time. I didn't do because of some fear or whatever, and years later I see that Wow if I had of done that it would be biting me in my a** today. Wasn't because I was an angel that I didn't only didn't want to be caught. So now I am learning to look at my choices and try to make the right ones. I do however have help in making right choices as I am a Ifa devoiteed I can always divine I no longer have an excuse to make wrong choices I can no longer say I didn't know. If I choose now to do something that I know isn't kosher then I have no one to blame but myself for the consequences. Also just a sidenote. consequences travel what I mean is I may pass off the scene but the consequences of my action may affect my children or my childrens children. example ow many families have had a father or something pass then out of the woodwork comes a child that no one knew about, feel me Osunkoya-Ifayomi

The Lord chastises us because He loves us, when we go through rough periods in our lives that is when God has our attention, I know from personal experience.

Abuse can happen but God is no fool. He knows your heart and He knows if you are truly sorry. When one is truly sorry and want to do things that are pleasing to God he/she will not continue to repeat the same sin over and over again.

Ok what did David - Solomon - Samson all have in COMMON? okay, I'll bite they ALL fell for some beautiful woman but did they do it (fall) over and over again? with the exception of Solomon cause had 50/11 wives and concubines but womanizing is just one sin so what is your point? I think what Drok is saying is that why ask for forgiveness and fall into the same thing(s) again, and I feel that pretty much WE know we are going to do the same sin over and over.

My point is we can never presume to know the extent of God's mercy! We often ASSUME that God's at some point gets sick of us! Well scripture doesn't validate that entirely, the Bible say's (NOT ME) That His mercy endures FOREVER, also the Bible say's (NOT ME) that we have NEW MERCIES EVERYDAY, the Bible ALSO STATES that when Peter asked Jesu how often should WE FORGIVE 7 times? Jesus said 70 TIMES 7 times! All I am saying is YES we should repent...however God will not banish you to hell if you fall...He always restores us and forgives (Read I John 1:9, Psalm 32, Psalm,38, and Psalm 51)
I hope that helps!

But let our final thought be of God’s spiritual mercies unto His own people. "Thy mercy is great unto the heavens" (Ps. 57:10). The riches thereof transcend our loftiest thought. "For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward them that fear Him" (Ps. 103:11). None can measure it. The elect are designated "vessels of mercy" (Rom. 9:23). It is mercy that quickened them when they were dead in sins (Eph. 2:4,5). It is mercy that saves them (Titus 3:5). It is His abundant mercy which begat them unto an eternal inheritance (1 Peter 1:3). Time would fail us to tell of His preserving, sustaining, pardoning, supplying mercy. Unto His own, God is "the Father of mercies" (2 Cor. 1:3).
