Aboru, Aboye,Abosise Ogbo Ato Asure Iworiwofun: My praise this morning goes to Akarama,Olorun, Eleda, Olodumare, Ifa, Irunmole, and Egungun Ile. I dobale before that which created the Rising Sun and the Setting Moon. I give praise to Awon Iyami Wa and bow before Odu my mother.
Some months ago a very learned and gifted woman senior priest and diviner Oloye FAMA, when I was in the mist of confusion told me this verse from Oturupon Oworin
Ifa ni ti a ba ji
Ogbon ni ka ma ko ra eni
Ka ma ii ni kutukutu pile wre
Ohun ti a ba ro ti ba gun
Ikin eni ni ka ma bi
Dia fun Paraka alago winniwinni
Tii nlo ree jijo alara nbara labe odan
Ifa says when we wake up
We should teach each other wisdom
Let us not wake up and plan stupid things
For whatever we cannot find solution to
Let us ask our Ikin(Ifa)
These were the declarations of Ifa to Paraka
The one with shinning costume
When going to dance astonishingly under Oda tree
What is Ifa?
Some years ago in the lessons from the Orunmila Youngster International, Inc there was lessons put on the above title. The foundation of our worship and journey in living on Aiye is Ifa. In this booklet they (being Oloye Solagbade S. Popoola, Oloye Ifakunle Oyesanya. and others to include other founding and pioneering members Oloye FAMA); on the definition of Ifa. It was limited to but inclusive of 20 fundamental ideas on what is Ifa. I give then again because it is important as new and elder worshippers that we know what we are bowing and prostrating too. It is not people but Divinity forces that brought about this hanging rock in the sky and more.
I hope that they will forgive me in the use of their material but it is important for our people here especially in the North American Afrikan Diaspora to have a clear understanding of what is Ifa, so that we are not ignorant and can trust our God given insticts to further our knowledge base.
1. Ifa is a body of knowledge and wisdom with which Olodumare perfected the works of creation(the earth, the heven and all that are there-in)
2.Ifa is the sacred and esoteric words spoken by Olodumare in the beginning which still binding. It is unchanging and indestructible
3. Ifa is the databank into which all the knowledge of life are encoded for humans tomake use of in order to live a fullfiled life( comfort, security, happiness, victory, longevity and all good things of life).
4. Ifa is the arrow pointer in the life of Humans, ie It shows the way and guides while following it.
5.Ifa is an embodiment of all disciplines such as philosophy, literature, science, sociology, ecology, psychology, mysticism, pharmacopoeia, arts, mathematics, history, economics, ect.
6. Ifa is the Truth and the character of Olodumare. It is the truth that is ever constant-yesterday, today, and forever.
7. Ifa is the sacred word of Olodumare which explains the beginning, the end, and the basis for existence of all things-past and present. The esoterism of the words can only be decoded by a sincere adept.
Ifa can also be described in the following words or phrases
8. Ifa iis not only a religion but a complete way of Life
9. Ifa is a witness to human destiny and creation(Elerii Ipin)
10. Ifa sees, knows and unravels the mysteries of the universe
11. Ifa is a comforter, benefacto, refuge and saviour.
12. Ifa is a great provider. It provides for not only oneself but one's companion.
(A bo ri ma ru; Oosa tii bo ni, bo alabarin eni)
13. Ifa teaches knowledge and wisdom even like one's sibling
(A ko ni loran bi iyekan eni)
14. Ifa is a historian of old (Opitan Ife Oodaye) which explains the origins, the sustenance and continuity of the universe.
15. Ifa prescribes the physical/spiritual solutions to all problems, issues, and developments.
16. Ifa is the Power base of all powers
17. Ifa is the enrgy base of all energies
18. Ifa is the knowledge, wisdom and treasure base.
19. Ifa know the action before it is initiated and the consequence of such action.
20. Ifa brings joy to the faces of humans (Olokun Asoro Dayo)
Again, this comes from Orunmila Youngsters International in 2001 of whom I was a member and at the time the secretary in the Los Angeles Ca. USA Chapter. This is the Ifa lecture series and Ounje Emi/Spiritual Menu Ipilese/Foundation.
Some of the questions that can from this point can begin to look at Ifa from this vantage point, In knowing what Ifa is what is my role as a devotee? How do I incorporate this in my life? What are the steps in developing a sound worship foundation for myself and family?
It would be helpful to meditate and really absorb the information and ask yourself how does this apply to my workplace, my school, my relationships. How does this empower my life when things are just not working well or if they are working well how do I keep the momentum?
Hmmmmmm!
