African-Americans are subjected to daily, minute insults and aggressions; situations Dr. Chester Pierce calls microinsults and microaggressions. These offensive mechanisms are designed to operationally keep Blacks in the inferior, dependent, helpless role. The mechanisms are nonverbal and kinetic, and they are well suited to control the space, time, energy and mobility of an African-American, while also producing feelings of degradation. An example of a microinsult occurs when a white person (who is 'innocently' operating under the stereotype that any African-American in a hotel must be a bellhop) asks a well-dressed African-American male waiting in the lobby to carry his luggage. An example of a microaggression is when a white person edges in front of an African-American at a sales counter, despite being the second to arrive. In both instances if the offended African-American shows ire, the perpetrators wonder why African-Americans are 'so sensitive'.
Have microinsults or microagressions been directed towards you, were you even aware, if so, talk about your experience.
I was at a birthday party last year. It was for a co-workers son. My son and I were the only Blacks at the party. Well, my co-worker introduced me to her great-aunt or some ole woman. She said, "Aunt Whatever, this is Blaque, she works with me". And without missing a beat the woman said, "Oh, does she answer your phones?" The old hag just assumed that I was inferior to her blonde blue eyed family member. Some things never change.

one of my white classmates passed away in May. I went to his visitation and one of his mother's friends (I didnt know who she was at the time) kept staring at me as if to say, "why is a black person here? SURELY she didnt go to school with Tony." She saw me hug his mother and father and later I went out to the hallway to speak with his sister. She came out too and stood to the side, still staring. After awhile she couldn't stand it any longer and asked me if I was a friend of his mother (do I look that old, heifer?) I told her, "no, Tony and I went to school together and he was always so sweet to me." and gave her a fake smile. She said, "oh," and walked off, but she was standing around the corner when I left. Blaque, you know I felt like saying other things to her ;D but I didnt.

I know. I'm glad your parents raised you right or you would have been swinging up in the funeral home.

I know. I'm glad your parents raised you right or you would have been swinging up in the funeral home. The LORD bridled my tongue cause I really wanted to take her by the arm and "escort her" out to the sidewalk, or maybe back to the embalming room to "talk" to her. ;D

Dolphinfan, are you saying that Black people are the worst? YES!!!!!!!! White people, you can get use to, BUT, you must be able to Correctly, shut-em down, so they get off your BACKKK. But when another Black person, turns around and does the same things........, it' like the difference between a shot, and a BOOSTER SHOOT!!!, where i work at ,it's the SISTAHS!!!. I've straighten out almost all the white one's because they always think they can get you FIRED, i straighten out with the quickness with a call to my people to there people WITH A RESPONSE NOTED!!!!!. Meaning I want a clear answer to why, your employer feel she can threaten, my employee!!, with being fired!!!. For some reason, these particular women feel, that if they can't get service right away, they need to give me, there five and dime storys!!!. Thats not my department, follow precedures, and the problems will get fixed!!!!. I don't handle, your particular issues!!. You can tell them this fifteen times!!! and you will get fifteen ARGUEMENTS, mainly because they believe that if they keep pushing. I will evenually give in, or just crack, I don't crack easily, and I only give in to something that doesn't weaken, my position, which is rarely. I will work with you, but I will not become a convience store for your problems, especially when you have a protocal, if an issue should arise!!.
