A long time ago in the 50s when racism was rampant and permissible, there was a sign put up on Miami Beach that read “No dogs, Niggers or Jews allowed”, the blacks in the area were understandably apprehensive, and responded in the “typical way”, creating public uproar with protest and demonstrations. The Jews, similarly offended responded in an interesting manner, quietly, a group of Jewish financers in the area polled their resources and bought the beach!
We need to stop using our history of oppression and struggle to justify our inadequacies in society, rather we should use our disadvantaged past as a chance for complete redemption. We should use the memories of our shackled fore-fathers to inspire progress so that when all is said and done, equality will no longer be a compromise but an absolute necessity.
“Remember, the only medicine man in the village cannot be made an outcast” – Old African Proverb.
