do you take the number anyway???
You meet someone that you know you're not remotely interested in. They give you their phone number. Do you take it?
There was this man following me around the grocery store the other night, telling me his life story and hitting on me. He asked for my number and before I could think of a reason not to give it to him, he said "Here, take mine instead".
I had no intentions of calling him, but when he wanted reassurance that I would call, I nodded my head yes.
All I wanted to do was get out of the store and to my car without this stranger following me.
Is there a tactful way out that situation?
Have you ever told someone you would call only to crumble up the number the first chance you got?

Several times. Sometimes, a friend will tell me "so and so likes you" and hands me her number. Many times I know the woman and haven't had any interest in her period. Other times, they'd point me out to her and I'd still trash it.
Other times, me and some folks will be talking or I would be talking one on one with a woman and the woman will look at me as if she likes me, then slips me her number when we're leaving...I didn't ask for it either.
One lady asked if she could call me....I told her no.

He asked for my number and before I could think of a reason not to give it to him, he said "Here, take mine instead". What a wimp... how do men survive acting this way? Other than coming on way to strong, he started to show some balls when he finally got around to asking for the phone number. But, then he chickens out mid stream and gives you his instead. Too much... This is a totally normal reaction. I quit giving my number to women years ago. I realized that everytime I gave my number out, the woman would always take it and say that she would call. But, if I had a 1 million dollars for every time a woman called me first... I'd be flat broke. ;D I think you handeled it fine. Nope... but then, I never tell a woman I'm going to call. Even if I asked for the number I may not call her. But, if I have any interest at all... I want to have the option.

I have a very simple rule of play about getting and recieving numbers. If we can't hold each other interest, in person. Why block the person telephone lines in private? So if we don't click, why be suspect about it. if we meet again, and we finnally do click!!. Then exhcange numbers. Nothing hard about it.
