Have you ever noticed that every time something happens in the Black community and a news reporter is there getting the story, he or she will find the MOST uneducated, toothless, disheveled Black person on the block to put in front of the camera?
Why do they do this?
As if they couldn’t find ONE well spoken person in the area to give an account of what happened?
A few months ago we had a nor’easter come through and a few areas where flooded. This one particular news station repeated showed a clip of this Black woman, who was all of 400 pounds, sloppy woman with uncombed hair being taken from her apartment by two national guardsmen who had to carry her to the back of the truck. It was a bit embarrassing but they showed the clip over and over again. Now I know someone else had to have been rescued on that street but they decided to show the clip of the big Black woman like that shit is amusing.
It's like they get a kick out of showing us at our worse.
What the hell is that about?

I got one just as bad Last year, a murder happened in the country/county nearby. A black man was charged with the murder. Right before the TV crew got ready to show an interview with some witnesses, they showed a black girl sitting on the porch part of a mobile home getting her hair braided. OK WHY DID they interview this young lady and only half of her hair was done? ?? I was like OH NO HOLE THE PHUCK UP! She was obviously getting extensions done because one part of her head had long hair and her natural hair was sticking up and out.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. I guess NO ONE ELSE in the area had anything to say except the girl getting her hair done.

I guess not I was appalled and mortified oh yeah, then you have the people who are interviewed with the horrible grammar..."I seent," instead of "I saw," etc.

It's like they get a kick out of showing us at our worse. What the hell is that about? 1You know..they do this!! I live in Richmond and a section call Battery Park was flooded...still is flooded because of 60 year old pipes that had never any maintenance done on them ( probably because it is a Black section of town.) Battery Park is an old historical well maintained area which for the last few years...I say since the early seventies at least has been mostly populated with upscale Blacks. It's a part of the Northside of Richmond where even Doug Wilder (now the Mayor used to be the Governor )lives. More and more the Blacks moved in...the whites moved out...There is a few from the old days and you have some new ones who have moved in because the area is historic and well kept. They showed the worst looking people and the bad thang about it is The Blacks out in The Suburbs don't know any better!! They think that ALL of the inhabitants are like that!! They go by what the Tube allows them to see. Here are a few pics I found, but they don't show anybody: www.flickr.com/photos/gnugeek/sets/72157594262115184/The thang is those same people who live in those nice areas of Battery Park NEVER would think somethin like this would happen to them...Not another Katrina " cause those ni**** down there Need to help themselves" But these find upstanding Blacks got the shock of their lives....Another Wake Up Call I like to say for all the Black folks around the US...Katrina was the first and I must commend Oprah for her show she did showing the conditions of the way other people be living all across the US of A. Living like somebody in a Third World Country. Anyway, those Upstanding Black Folks living in their fine homes did not get ANY help from FEMA!! Majority of their homes are ruined. No place to go....misplaced like Katrina victims. They have to get loans from the SBA. Isn't That a TRIP down the NeGro Path. It showed them Who they Really are in the White sucker's eyes . No matter How Far up the ladder they had traveled and snobbing their noses up at people like that big fat sloppy woman on TV. And some of them are not going to "qualify' for a loan...... EmBaRraSSin'2 Whities shouldn't surprise anybody in what they do or don't do!! " Life is like a box of choclates.......they will eat you UP ~ ALIVE!!"

Sudan, it looks like a very beautiful area. I hear about Richmond flooding often. I think this last rain storm that we had, they showed Richmond on the news. They likened it to New Orleans because of the way it's shaped...like a bowl.
But I feel you on what you are saying, some Black folk are just as prejudiced against other Black folk as white people are. But they well get the Negro Wake Up Call sooner or later.
Hey, on a side note. I was in Richmond earlier this year. Went to this SLAMMING soul food restaurant. I think it was called Croaker...have you ever heard of it?

The food won’t nothing but the truth! We don’t have anything like that in Newport News.

These negative images are so dangerous. If we are constantly exposed to negative images of our race we begin internalize the same social and personal characteristics of these images. It’s like, we are who they say we are. That’s what’s wrong with youth today. They see the negative images of Hip Hop and Gangster Rap and either either consciously or unconsciously start to believe that is how they should behave. Here’s a thought…turn off the TV.

Yeah that mess is really up to the reporter's discretion. They sit back and assess the situation or area and THEY pick who they think would be a good "mouth piece" for the situation. I must admit I have never seen a black reporter do this.
But here there are some backwater white folx that make it to prime time and it is funny too. Here they will stick a mic in your face but you have to stick out in the crowd some kinda way. For example I went to see a presidential candidate (for the life of me now I can't remember who it was... well he didn't win) a few years ago I was the ONLY black person in there and I had two young children with me. One of the reporters from the back tapped me and asked me would I like to answer some questions for the news and I said okay. So I got to watch myself on t.v. I had my blazer on my hair done and used the correct tense in my speech so I could at least look half way intelligent.
You are right they pick these people for drama.

I used to be a reporter - not the TV kind, but the newspaper kind - and I must admit when it came to interviewing black folks, I get some crazy ones.
Excluding your black leaders, the adult ones who were the most willing to talk to me were the ones who talked like you all have described: bad grammar and bad dress. I made sure I took a tape recorder because I knew I would not be able to write down some of their comments fast enough. I also recorded them because I had to clean up a lot of what they said because of their horrible grammar.
The grown ones who could talk proper and looked decent enough didn't want to be bothered. This includes your uppity mofos. They all acted like they were too good to speak to you, but always want to complain about coverage.
It was much better when it came to talking to black children, teens and young adults. They all wanted to offer their comments.
That's been my experience.
