Comedian Bill Cosby recently donated $3 million to Atlanta's Morehouse School of Medicine. Ed Gordon talks with Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. surgeon general and now president of the school, about the generous donation, the largest individual gift ever given to the school. It's about Bill started letting his money do the talking. He is quick to point out the problems of Black America but I didn't see him trying to fix any of them. But this is cool...very generous.

What are you talking about? Bill's been donating money and working with various causes for years. He's donated to Temple, Fisk, Jesse's Rainbow Push Coalition and has worked with the UNCF.

Ok, great. He's donated in the past. Lately his rants against Black America seems to have over shadowed anything he's done for Black America. I have a problem with people who love to point out problems but don't want to get down and dirty to fix the problems. I'm just over Bill and his remarks.

I understand your feelings about him blasting black folx but there is nothing that he said that is not true... Everyone seems to be upset because of the way the message has been presented to us. It is not about the way he said it, it is the meat in the message that we need to pay attention to. I have as well as I am sure you have been to too many places where black folx frequent and I have set back and watched us at work. It is classless, we use folx and one of the biggest habits blacks folx have is trying to get something for nothing. The importance level of things we care about have drastically lowered. Case in point a parent crabs at the school about a childs' shoes instead of being worried about his grades and l am sure you know. It takes an adult to help these kids with their homework and teach them organization, responsibility and to care about where they are going in life, all of which many do NOT get at home. Bill gets props from me because I for one have watched the lackadaisical attitude in my community. They are the same everywhere the only thing difference are street locations. Bill has given but no matter how much his personal life has suffered it should not negate the message of caring for our fellow man and to have and aspire to a higher existence.

Hey All, I'm a first time poster here and as I said in my greeting, you have a beautiful site here, Blaque.
Anyway, I have a different take on this Cosby thing. I also thank Bill for this donation because I didn't see his critics standing in line to donate anything. I think that the black community sometimes expects too much of some black people and practically nothing from others. Bill Cosby is gettin on up there in age and we know he has some personal issues. Also, I'll bet he's never fully recovered from the murder of his son. There are so many others who could form the massive organization that would be needed to even begin to solve the problems that plague us and such an organization would be extremely aggravating to spearhead and keep together.
Also, I must say that I think the problems of our folks have reached the point where no one knows what will really work for sure to turn us around. Our problems are so multifaceted and nuanced until I think that almost everything is a speculative or trial and error effort. Then there are so many camps of thought among black folks out there about what we should do. For ex. the nationalists think we should separate and go back to Africa or build a black nation somewhere. The segregationists think that integration set us back and that we should remain here, but separate as much as possible inside this country with our own thriving schools, businesses, neighborhoods, etc.. The integrationists believe we should assimilate and blend in, and on and on.
One thing for sure is if we don't have the right vision for our future, we will squander our resoures, so the right VISION is the key.
BTW, I think I should mention that I'm interracially married to a white man in case this board has members who would have a problem with that. I have strong and perhaps different views on various issues, but I invite y'all to check out my blog at www.bfinterracialmarriage.blogspot.com where I talk about interracial interactions in the world, along with aspects of my marriage.

Evia, thanks for your comments. I like your vibe and I hope that you visit us often. Also, very nice blog you have there. I had to abandon mine. I didn't have the time nor energy to post there and foster this board.
I agree with some of Cosby's view, but like Sweetpie said, it was all in the delivery. But I think one positive thing that came from Cosby's comments is that it caused Black America to talk about our problems. That's a step in the right direction. Once we start to really discuss the issues of our Black communities maybe more people will want to do more to resolve the issues.

I'll be hopping back and forth between the blog and here sometimes. Yes, Cosby's delivery was raw, but as you say,it got our attention. Seems it embarrassed some of us, but the fact is that the world (this country and its friends, at least) already knows our stuff. White folks definitely already know our bizness, so I'm not sure who his critics felt we should keep trying to hide from.

Tryting to talk calmy and nicely to people who don't want to hear you is not working. Bill Cosby is doing what he has to save the next generation beacuse thsi current one may very well be lost because our sense of unity has been lost and many among us refuse to realize that. We can't dismiss Cosby because of how he said it, this is how we derail ourselves, it's WHAT he is saying that's important.
