WE HAVE FAILED THIS GENERATION by George Cook
letstalkhonestly.com
This is a message to all African American adults especially those who have achieved some type of success or have been able to move above the middle class. This message is simple. We have failed this past generation of black youth and if we don't start helping this generation we will have lost them to. WE have let the last glorify thug culture and casual sex to the point where a young 14 year old girl's accessories include her handbag, cell phone and 3 month old baby
Before anyone gets's defensive please read on. Many of us think we are helping by setting a good example but we fail to realize is that most inner city and poor kids don't see us set that example because let's face it, THEY DON'T SEE US.
There is nothing wrong with becoming successful and moving to a better neighborhood but there is something wrong with STAYING away. When many of these children are at home their role models are rappers, singers, sports figures, gang bangers, and drug dealers. The last two are the most dangerous because our children are more likely to interact with them than a positive black man or woman.
These are the voices in their ears not a successful black business person telling them what is needed to get to his/her position or a black doctor or police officer sharing his love of helping people.
But we can change that by mentoring, coaching, tutoring, running a boy/girl scout troop, running dance classes or karate classes at the local community center for free, being a big brother/sister anything to help put positive role models in our children's lives. I am not just talking either I volunteer coach football and basketball and read my poetry to the youth as well as have sit downs with them just to talk.
Whether it be coaching or tutoring that is a chance to teach these children some values such as being on time, teamwork, respecting others and other things that sadly many are not learning at home. I make this plea even harder to AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN. Our children need those male role models that have been lacking for far too long. I beg you to help in some way to keep this generation from falling into the black hole we have let the last fall into.
Remember success is not measured by the house you have, the car you drive, or by the size of your bank account but by how many you can help achieve the same and to be better in life. On second thought that's not just success but 1 hell of a legacy!
