Hi everyone it's nice to finally post an article about me, here is an article that appeared in the local Union County newspapers ( Union Leader, Summit Observer, The Progress, The Eagle ) here in NJ. There is one correction, the books are available to be read for free online at www.letstalkhonestly.com/page/page/3118263.htm
Cook examines prejudice in "Let's talk Honestly, Vol.II
Jasmine Cabell-Green Correspondent Summit Observer
Shortly after an unpleasant incident at a restaurant owned by a black man, author George Cook wrote a poem about it. Soon after he wrote 30 more about the various issues blacks deal with and have been dealing with for years. "Let's Talk Honestly, Vol 2" is a collection of poems and stories that touch on many subjects, such as domestic abuse, fatherhood, and adoption, that many don't want to talk about.
"This was my way of reaching the public without preaching: a way to create awareness and hopefully open some eyes," said Cook.
There are 18 poets that have contributed to the book that are a mixture of men and women and even features a few families. Although some of the issues raised aren't as well received as other, most of the feedback has been positive and encouraging.
"Many thought I was perpetuating negative stereotypes, but I am not making anything up. These are the issues that are already out there," said Cook.
Cook is seen to some as a mentor. He intends not only to create awareness about certain issues, but he also uses his books as a platform for up-and-coming poets and storytellers.
Both volumes of the book are compromised with various poets who are well known within the Internet community of poets, but aren't as recognized outside of the Internet. This is why I am dedicated to getting this book published. Both volumes can be read and purchased online," said Cook.
Regardless of the negative feedback, Cook is only trying to help people deal with serious issues.
"Most of all, I feel that there is a lack of male role models. Simply put there are issues that African Americans deal with today, that we've been dealing with for along time. I just want to bring some things back into the light. It is to create awareness."
