The hands of youths are not long enough to reach the shelf
Those of elders are not slim enough to enter a calabash
The errand that youths send elders, let the elders not refuse
These are obligations of parents to thier children
These were the declarations of Ifa to Orunmila
When his Akapo(disciple) dragged him to Olodumare in protest
Orunmila said that he tried all his efforts for his Akapo
Olodumare then responded that nobody should judge any matter narrated by one side
He who judges one side, you are bad
He who judges one side, you are not good
When you have not heard from the other side
Why do you prounouce your judgement?
While there are many lessons to be learn from this Odu Ifa what is shared here is multi-leveled lessons on our responsibilities as parents and as children. We can also look at the world we live in and see from a jaundice perspective or with the healing balm of Ifa with clarity and nourishment.
As an Yoruba Afrikan born in North American, born during a time when the turbulence and disturbances of injustice reign, during the "Jim Crow", I remember when we were "Colored", "Negro", and the "N" word was a travestry and a shame to say and even more to have said to you in jest-it was a word of anger, blood biting through your teeth with a hatred of visions of hung men and women of color from popular trees. Picnics held in honor of your death, this is the age I came up in.
We must all- Afrikan men-Afrikan women and all Human Beings; step up to the plate and help to remove systematic and institutionalized racism effects of what these horrors have done to our people.
We have a spiritual enity called Ifa that is designed by Olodumare to bring the healing balm in its encoded messages to change the conditions of Human Beings.
You see as those who came up in this era and are still around today can tell you, that Orisa worship coupled with the Black Nationalist forum was designed to give the Afrikan community the energy to move with a focus to change our people's minds and that of those who opposed us in our gathering our denied destinies and interferred with goals for living life with dignity and equitable lifestyles as that of our counterparts in Western Societies or in positions of power.
Many Afrikan people during that time had not even understood what Ifa was. But if we are to move forward we need to make a mark difference in our understanding of the true essence of Ifa. What does to mean to Afrikan people worldwide? Not just to the Strong Black man but to all people who are loving Ifa and seeking to know the true understanding of Ifa in your life and that of your family, friends, associations. We must develop ways to help our men, women, and children stand even if it is to give them the hard love that must not make one a co-dependent or enabler.
In the Odu Ifa the story is that this particular Akapo was angry with Orunmila, so angry about how he was not progressing in life that he took Orunmila before the court of Olodumare to make a complaint.
What happen was Olodumare found that it was not Orunmila at fault, Orunmila certainly did every ebo and ritual to assist his disciple but the Akapo's own Ori that kept him from making progress or having a successful life. It was not time nor was it what this Akapo has contracted to do before he entered into the world(Akunlegba-Akunleyan) The Akapo did not look at his life in calm, detached or cool manner as prescribed by Ifa. Instead of seeking a peaceful solutions he reacted in anger and blamed others for his failings. Orunmila was not daunted but make still every effort to help the Akapo change his life and mind to bring him in alignment with the wisdom of Ifa applied to his life.
It is all our responsibilities to changed the couese of the conditions of our men, our women, and our children through Ifa finding out what our Ori has contracted to do in this world, what promises were made in Heaven. Then, go about the job of doing what we are destined to complete as our assignment in Aiye. Aiye Loja Orun Nile O! This we now can do with the support and strenght of the Olodumare, Ori Isese, Irunmole,Orisa, and Egungun Ile.
